Bryant Lake Bowl

Even though we’d both recently enjoyed holiday indulgences over Christmas, this morning my breakfast companion and I were ready for another, more familiar indulgence: breakfast. And today’s Tour selection just so happened to be another bowling alley (just like Elsie’s). After a short, chilly jaunt down Lake Street, we entered the small dining area of Bryant Lake Bowl. The dining area housed just a few tables and small bar right at the front before opening up into a full bowling alley. At just two of the small wooden tables sat a couple of hip middle-aged couples, all of whom looked uninterested in their dining partners and chose to independently read sections of the morning paper and avoid eye contact with everyone in the room. Ah, the joys of marriage.

After plopping down at a small table by the window (but far from the troubled couples), we took a few minutes to sip our coffees (verdict: just okay, nothing great) and look at our ordering options. Our waiter sauntered over, dripping hipster, and was patient and kind when we took approximately six hours to order. Seriously, though, he came back four times to check if we were ready. I think it was because we hadn’t seen each other in awhile so talking proved to be more important than menu-perusing. But our waiter continued to come back, with no judgment or annoyance, just a smooth smile and witty remarks. If you can’t tell, I loved him a little bit.

When we finally did look at the breakfast menu, we found it to be pretty full of variety, especially for a bowling alley. Not only do you have your choice of a variety of traditional morning dishes, but Bryant also serves up five scramble options, three omelette choices, and an impressive list of side items to mix and match for an a la carte breakfast. Oh, and they also have a gluten-free bread option. Score. So, after weighing my numerous options, I selected the Huevos Rancheros ($10) and my breakfast companion chose the BBQ Bowler ($12.50). We proceeded to chat, avoiding reading the paper and engaging in direct eye contact, while hungrily waiting for our meals.

Finally, they arrived. My breakfast? Mmm. Two crispy corn tortillas were stacked on top of one another with layers of scrambled eggs, black beans, tomatoes, and rice in between. The delectable stack also came with a side of salsa, but I quickly deemed it too spicy for use. Though the aesthetically pleasing stack proved to be impractical for actual eating, that didn’t stop me from loving it. The corn tortillas were deeply browned and crispy, resembling more of a giant tortilla chip with which I could scoop up combinations of fluffy scrambled eggs, seasoned rice, and fresh black beans. It truly was the perfect version of a gluten-free Mexican breakfast and when it was gone I was full, satisfied, and willing to eat it all over again.

My breakfast partner also loved her breakfast. Her meal, a BBQ bowler biscuit topped with a pulled pork and cheddar scramble, was simply delectable. The pulled pork was the real star of this dish for her. On its own it was tender and juicy but the addition of the sweet, tangy barbecue sauce (not at all spicy like most BBQs) made it really layered and complex. This part of the dish was combined with a cheddar scramble and topped a soft, melt-in-your-mouth biscuit. Yum. And finally, though my friend usually isn’t a fan of the mixed greens side, it proved to be a light, fresh side that was actually a really nice compliment to the filling biscuit scramble. Winner, winner, pork breakfast.

Bryant Lake Bowl isn’t just for bowling, friends. Though I wasn’t jazzed about the coffee, if you come here for a weekend breakfast you can expect amazing food and fantastic service. And maybe, just maybe you’ll be inspired to stay for a mid-morning bowling game.
